DC Zoo

We love being so close to so many great cities, they have so much to offer.
The weather was fabulous on Saturday, so we couldn't let a gorgeous day like that pass us by. We headed to DC to take the kids to the zoo. We were also hoping to hit the air and space museum but ran out of time.

J and K in front of the entrance and of course, J is trying to do bunny ears to K.
G in front of the elephants, holding his little tiny little people dog. He hauled that little dog all over the zoo like it was a real pet
He also wanted a pic in front of the bamboo. Any time my kids are WILLING to pose, I'll snatch that opportunity!
J in front of the elephants.
This sneaky little bird came up behind J and scared her half to death. She had her back to it and was sitting on a little wall, she turned and was face to face with this little bird. It scared her pretty good, poor little gal.

We had a great time! The kids favorite was the giant panda, which my picture didn't turn out of, and huge tortoises, the kids now want one for a pet!

Another great thing was afterward, right across the street from the entrance is a frozen yogurt place. The kids all got to make their own and add the toppings they wanted.
An added bonus to a great day in DC.

Skate park

Once again, the weather has been fabulous so the kids were begging to go to the skate park! There were a lot of older kids there, but that didn't deter G, he took to the ramps like the rest of them. He LOVES riding here!

J had fun collecting sticks while she waited for G
Then we headed to the park, G couldn't get enough of the swings

Ducks in the pond quack a happy song.....
We couldn't forget B and I had to include this pic!
When he tries something new, he takes it very serious! His face says it all.
At one point, he put both of his arms straight down by his sides and his feet were moving a mile a minute-just like riverdance.
This little kiddo is so funny!

a long road....

this is a long and personal post... read at your own risk.

Anyone who knows this little guy well knows he is a lot of things:
A happy kiddo, a great climber, amazing coordination, a creator, fun loving, an amazing bike rider, a sweet brother, a great reader...i could go on. Although all these things are AMAZING, the one thing he ISN'T, is a great eater.
It has been the cause of many tears (from both him and me), many frustration, and many heartfelt prayers.

It is always on our mind.
How can we help him?

It goes beyond just being 'picky'. I have a picky eater-K claims that title-but I can still get him to eat and taste things. G's problems go much deeper. We tried 'starving him out and giving into the hope that he will eat when he's hungry', we did that for a month, he went to bed crying every night, begging for a piece of bread because he was so hungry and chose not to eat dinner. We tried forcing food into his mouth which ended up with him throwing up.
He hasn't tried anything new for over 3 years.
It has been a long journey.
He went through a phase when he wouldn't eat at the dinner table with us, because he didn't want to smell the food, finally overcame that with tears and persistence. Birthday parties are hard, because he doesn't want to be around the food, but he wants to go so bad. Going on vacation is SO hard, because I have to plan and bring food for him that he will eat.
It is always on my mind.
The biggest red flags for me recently have been when he would smell something that I was cooking and ask what it was because it smelled so good. When I offered him some, he would just say 'no thanks.' He also keeps telling me about ice cream days on Fridays. He is so excited for them! Has he ever brought his .50 cents to buy one,? NO. Why not, because he's worried he wont get the flavor he likes and he is too scared to try a different kind. But he tells me every Friday that it's ice cream friday-it breaks my heart. Finally, we were at stake conference, and got home and he said he was starving. I opened the fridge and kneeled down by him and said, let's find something for you to eat, what do you want. He burst into tears and said, 'mom, i just don't know what to eat.' He has eaten the same thing for lunch and dinner for 3 +years, PB&J, with an occasional pancake or bowl of cereal.
At the beginning of this school year, I brought it up with out pediatrician ( i have talked to them before) and I told her I wanted to take him to a psychologist. She laughed at me. And said he would outgrow it. Really, i've ben hearing that for the past 3 years.
Recently my friend sent me an article that put into words so many of the things I have felt for my little G. He is scared of food. The same way that people who have a phobia of dogs are scared of dogs. Asking G to eat something he hasn't tried before is like putting a dog on a person who is terrified, and asking them to pet it. OK, so I don't know if it runs that deep, but maybe.
We are finally taking the first steps!
C took G to the doc for an ear ache, I asked C to bring up eating again. He told him everything, without hesitation they gave us a referral for a food doc. We have some paper work to send in, BUT
there is a weight off my shoulders that has been there for too long.
Food is such a big part of everything we do.
It has been such a long battle,
I couldn't be more excited for G and so excited at the hopefulness of everything.

my lucky 3 leaf clover

St. Patricks day here was a beautiful day.
My two little lepruchans went out and decided to look for 3 leaf clovers.
They found a ton! They were so excited.
I told them that 4 leaf clovers were even more lucky, but they couldn't find any of those, so they went back to looking for 3 leaf clovers.
They came back with two sacks full.

They couldn't have been happier!

Caught!

One thing I love to do is after B has fallen asleep, I love to sneak into his room and cover him up. He always looks so peaceful , I love watching him sleep.
I finally decided to try to get a picture of him.
I snuck into his room, pushed down the button half way to focus it, and the flash turned on, before I could snap the picture and walk out, he looked up at me. I still took the picture and ran out, and he did go back to sleep, BUT I didn't get the picture I wanted. I may have to try again....

adventure on saturday

Saturday came around and we were ready to get out. We decided to take the kids to a place called indian echo caverns, about 1 1/2 hr. drive. We checked their website to make sure they were open, and we headed out.
We got there, only to find out because of all the recent flooding in PA, they weren't giving tours because of the water levels.

They had a park the kids played at for a while.
We brought our cousins flat stanley along, K wanted a picture of him over the flooding river
G spent time climbing a tree
Little B just hanging out in the kids pack and loving it!
So, we were stuck. What to do?
We decided to go to Lancaster, only about another 1/2 hour.

I love this picture of the typical amish home.
My favorite is the clothes line (up near the house), these are all over, and I love how huge they are!

We weren't sure where to go in Lancaster, so we headed to bird in hand, a great place for amish sites. We went to a farmers market, and saw some fun toys that the kids got to play with

i dont think I will ever get tired of seeing horse drawn carriages moving along with traffic
i don't know if the kids had a great time, but there was no complaining. DVDs and Leapsters helped with that. I always love visiting new places!

what we've been up too

K and a friend from school did a science fair project on the G-force of Rollercoasters. Here's a pic of their board and his partner.

It has been warming up around here which has been so nice, but yesterday it poured ALL day long, later in the evening, it turned to snow and we woke up to this- about 12 inches of fresh snow. The kids had fun playing in it
K's take off

and landing.
The kids still love B just as much, J is always wanting me to take pics with her and little B
We love this sweet guy!

other specs

This is G's other pair of glasses he picked out. We weren't sure how he would do at keeping track of them, but he has done amazing!
He doesn't like this pair as much and asked if he could return them.
He only wears these if he can't find his other ones,
I think he looks cute (mom's opinion).
